Protect Your Pipes This Winter - Don’t Let the Cold Catch You Off Guard!

Writer's picture: Ken Pringle Ken Pringle

With freezing temperatures in the forecast this winter, it’s time to take action to protect your home from the costly and disruptive damage caused by frozen pipes. When temperatures plummet, your pipes are at risk of freezing—and the consequences can wreak havoc on your home. Here’s what you need to know and how to stay prepared.

Frozen pipes don’t just stop the flow of water; they can lead to severe and expensive damage. When water freezes, it expands, causing faucets and shower valves to crack and break, leading to costly replacements. Freezing water creates immense pressure, which can pull pipes apart at joints, leading to leaks or even full disconnections. Frozen pipes often result in multiple splits. In fact, it’s common to see two to four splits at a time, and in extreme cases, we’ve encountered up to seventy-eight breaks in a single property. Water heaters aren’t immune to the cold either. Freezing temperatures can cause significant damage, requiring expensive repairs or even a complete replacement.

The good news is that you can take steps to protect your pipes and avoid the costly consequences of freezing temperatures. 1) Wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas such as attics, basements, crawl spaces, or along exterior walls with pipe insulation. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent freezing. 2) Keep your thermostat set to a steady temperature throughout the day and night, even if you’re not home. A stable indoor environment helps prevent pipes from freezing. 3) Open cabinet doors under sinks in your kitchen and bathrooms to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. 4) Allow a small stream of water to drip from a faucet furthest from your water supply line. Moving water is less likely to freeze. 5) Inspect your home for cracks or openings around windows and doors where cold air could seep in. Seal these areas to keep the chill out and protect your pipes. 6) Drain and remove all garden hoses before the freeze hits. Water trapped inside hoses can freeze and back up into the pipes, causing damage. 7) Use faucet covers to insulate outdoor faucets or shut off the water supply to these faucets and drain the lines to ensure no water is left inside.

By taking these proactive measures now, you can avoid the stress and expense of repairing burst pipes, cracked water heaters, and other winter-related plumbing issues.
